Robert J. Benzing
1930-2020

Robert John Benzing, 90, of Delaware, OH passed away on November 12, 2020. Bob was born to John and Ida (Gerber) Benzing, on April 14, 1930, in Lancaster, NY. He graduated from Purdue University with a BS Chemistry (52) and a MS Chemistry (53). Bob served in the United States Air Force and spent his career working at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. From 1953-1956 he was a Mechanical Engineer, Petroleum Products Branch of the Air Force Materials Laboratory. From 1955-1956, he was a Mechanical Engineer Lubricants Section, AFML. In 1956 he became the Section Chief, Fluid and Lubricant Materials Branch.  In 1963 he became the Technical Manager for Lubricant and Fluid Mechanics, Fluid and Lubricant Materials Branch, Nonmetallic Materials Division of AFML.  His many career accomplishments include his service as President of the American Society of Lubrication Engineers.

Bob retired to his beloved Vermont where he remained active, devoting many hours volunteering for his church, serving his town, and enjoying the state he loved so much. More than anything Bob loved his family. He married Joyce Smith Benzing in 1963, who survives him after fifty-seven years of marriage. He and his wife recently spent two years compiling their family's history with photographs and stories to remember them by. Bob is also survived by daughter Tracy Ann Gillam (Steve) and son Timothy John Benzing (Joy). He was known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren (Whitney Benzing, Kendall Gillam, Henry Benzing, Erza Benzing and Connor Gillam) and great-grandchildren (Thomas and Alydia Lawyer), who will miss him dearly. Bob was known for his love of travel and took many memorable trips over his lifetime. He captured thousands of photographs and loved to share them along with tales of his trips. Bob was always accompanied by his wife and often by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family will cherish the time and adventures they had together.
