Dr. Lawrence R. Bidwell
January 8, 1931 - October 31, 2015

Lawrence R. Bidwell, age 84, of Riverside, passed peacefully from this life on October 31, 2015, after a three year battle with cancer. Larry was born on January 8, 1931 in Olean, NY to Helen Garmong Bidwell and Lyle M. Bidwell. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Kathy Moore. Larry is survived by his cherished soulmate and wife as well as his beloved children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister, and nephew. He married the love of his life of 63 years, Patricia Mohr Bidwell, on September 6, 1952 at St. Peter Church in Canton, Ohio after meeting her as a fellow student at their much-loved Ohio State University. Larry and Pat soon moved to Dayton and became members of St. Helen Church. Their children, Mark (Angela) Bidwell, J. Keith (Pamela) Bidwell, Brian (Joline) Bidwell, and Karen (Perry) Natale will forever revere their father for the many years of loving guidance and inspiration that he never failed to provide to them. Larry had a very special place in his heart for his ten admiring and devoted grandchildren: Tiffany (Stewart) Chauder, Christopher Bidwell, Jennifer (Joseph) Turner, Sarah Bidwell, Lauren (Niall) McMahon, Robert Bidwell, Allison Bidwell, Shannon Bidwell, Nicholas Natale, and Mia Natale. He was filled with delight at the recent additions of his great grandchildren: Joseph, Madelyn, and Cora Turner. Larry also held his sister Joanna (Wil) Bidwell-Rodriguez, and his nephew, Garrett (Lisa) Koci, very dear to him. During his meager beginnings, Larry found an inner determination and ambition to become educated and accomplished. His devoted mother sacrificed and encouraged him to no end in this regard; supporting his ongoing efforts in a way that only a mother can. In the course of his tenure as a student at Mayfield High School in Cleveland, Ohio, he discovered a profound interest and drive to become a scientist. He also enjoyed athletics and the opportunity to become a team player. Larry was honored as “top student” in both chemistry and physics and received varsity letters in football and track for two years. He graduated from Mayfield in 1948. In 2010, his life achievements were recognized and honored further as he became an inductee into the Mayfield High School Hall of Fame. Larry entered The Ohio State University and pursued a career path in metallurgical engineering. As a perseverant OSU student, working to pay his own way, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953, a Master of Science degree in 1954, and ultimately, a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1962; all in metallurgical engineering. Aside from his student work, Larry joined the US Air Force ROTC and became a member of Delta Chi fraternity. In his graduate years, he had the unwavering devotion of his loving wife Pat, to see him through his academic journey. He received numerous university and national recognitions for his accomplishments as an OSU student. Together, Larry and Pat shared exciting times witnessing a young Woody Hayes begin his illustrious coaching career and Howard “Hopalong” Cassidy forge his Heisman Award winning college football credentials. Larry continued his tradition of excellence in his professional career. He served The United States of America as an officer in the Air Force and later continued to be employed by the USAF and the Department of Defense in a civilian capacity until 1993. During this tenure, Dr. Bidwell conducted individual research, laboratory management of over 160 scientists and engineers, and executive oversight and consultant status at a national level. His accomplishments included authorship of over 35 scientific publications in metallurgy and physics, over 40 national and international scientific presentations, and the invention and patent of a refined form of stainless steel that is used to this day in US military aircraft and naval vessels. He was honored to be chosen to participate as a consultant in a series of international treaty conferences held in Paris, France. Dr. Bidwell received over 20 awards and commendations from the US Department of Defense and professional societies during this phase of his career. Following, he became employed by the Universal Technology Corporation in an executive capacity, with numerous responsibilities including work with local universities, negotiation of US military contracts, and protagonist for US competiveness in the international marketplace. He retired from UTC in 2006, but remained in demand as a consultant for several years. Despite his notable academic and professional accomplishments, Dr. Bidwell will always be simply “Larry” to his loving and grateful family and numerous friends. He lived for life’s simple pleasures: time on the links with Pat, his #1 golf buddy, gathering all of his family together for summer vacations together at the beach, cheering his children and grandchildren on in their school activities, playing cards and partying with his best friends, personally attending to every little detail of his well-kept home, making compelling political arguments, being a Bengals fan, and of course, anything Ohio State. Larry loved history and spent countless hours on his computer and on the road exploring his family genealogy. He was a proud member of The Sons of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society. Recently he said, “There is little doubt that my family is my greatest joy. I am not sure that I deserve much credit.” Larry’s appreciative family truly knows otherwise and will never forget all he has lovingly done for them.
