Dr. Gary L. Denman

Gary received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1962 and both his master’s and Ph.D. from Ohio State University. He had a long career with the Air Force Department of Defense.  Upon graduation from the University of Cincinnati in 1962, he became a Materials Engineer, Thermal Property Group, Materials Application Division, Air Force Materials Laboratory, (AFRL).  In 1967 he became a Materials Engineer, Space and Missiles Support Branch, Materials Support Division, AFRL.  He later served as Branch Chief of the Laser Hardened Materials Branch.  In 1983 he became Chief, Manufacturing Technology Division, AFRL and two years later, the director of the U.S. Air Force’s Materials Laboratory.  From 1988-1991, he served as deputy director of Wright Laboratories (1988-1991) at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, before becoming director of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 1991. He was a frequent spokesperson for the Department of Defense and interfaced with congressional committees and White House senior staff. In 1997, Dr. Denman became the chief operating officer at GRCI, a NYSE publicly traded company, which performed professional engineering services for government and industrial organizations. He ended his career with GRCI as their president and CEO. In 2000 he moved to Pinehurst, with his wife Elizabeth to pursue their dream of living on a golf course. He was an avid golfer and member and enthusiastic supporter of the Tin Whistles.

Gary is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Denman; daughter, Judith Hauser (Peter); son, Michael Denman (Janet); grandchildren, Henry and Lydia Hauser, Samuel and Frances Denman; and one brother, Stephen Denman (Joanne).
