Larry Hjelm
January 9, 1935 – May 16, 2005

HJELM, Larry age 70, of Dayton, passed away Monday, May 16, 2005 at his residence. Larry was born on January 9, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois to Lawrence and Evelyn (Salava) Hjelm. Larry received his BS in Metallurgical Engineering in 1957 from Illinois Institute of Technology. After a short term at Western Electric Co. and graduate school, he was called to Wright- Patterson AFB, where he was assigned to the Air Force Materials Laboratory as a 2nd Lieutenant and later as a civilian. He was involved in numerous programs and his management positions were many. In the late 60's, he headed the AFML West Coast Office emphasizing reentry vehicle materials such as carbon/ carbon and refractory ceramics, and helping introduce the satellite industry to graphite epoxy. Returning to Dayton in the early 70's, Larry became the Deputy Chief of the Metals and Ceramics Division of AFML personally advocating and involved with the development and application of turbine engine materials and processes. In the mid 80's, he became the AFML representative in the National Aerospace-Plane program. In the 90's, he was the Manager, Defense Reinvestment/Technology Transfer for AFML working closely with 7 government agencies conducting studies and assessments, building advocacy cases, and presenting and briefing these to all levels. Working with the Titanium industry, Larry developed proposals based on analysis of potential technical efforts that could reduce costs and improve productivity, which would reduce costs and lead-time for DoD and broaden the market base in commercial applications leading to more global competitiveness. He also planned and was the manager of the HyTech mach 8, scramjet engine materials program. Larry retired in October 1996, after 38 years of service. He then began consulting with numerous organizations in the area of aerospace materials and processes. As an avid camper, hunter and fisherman, Larry passed down his passion and respect for nature and wildlife to his family and friends.

Loving husband of 46 years, wonderful father, bursting with pride grandfather and great friend. Larry leaves behind wife, Joan; children, Nick Hjelm and Donna Mentana, Joe and Laura Hjelm and Cathy and Mark Warren; grandchildren Steven, Chris and Matthew; cousin, Harold; dear friends; fishing buddies; coworkers; and fraternity brothers.
