John Douglas Latva
March 9, 1934 – December 13, 2019

Jack is a graduate of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, earning his Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering in 1956.

Jack came to the Air Force Materials Laboratory in 1956 as a Materials Engineer in the Ceramics and Graphite Branch of the Metals & Ceramics Division. He specialized in graphitic materials and refractory ceramics. He received many awards and distinctions over his career.

A quote from a former senior official in the Air Force: “He became one of the key players in the investment strategy of the Lab in advocating for a balanced program, including ceramics, at a time when others were moving to most of the research being in advanced metals and the new composites. He also became a strong behind the scenes player in making the organizational development program work in spite of early resistance by many long time division chiefs. A strong but kind and gentle man.”

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elva Latva. He is survived by his wife, Ruth A. Latva. They were married for 62 years. Also surviving are a daughter, Laura Latva; son, David (Donna) Latva; and grandchildren, Drew Rudolph and Delaney Rudolph.
